Initially in ancient Egypt, and later throughout the eastern Mediterranean, the Sacred Beetle was an important symbol, considered a source of life, creativity, virility and renewal.
The Egyptians associated the activity of the dung beetle – depositing its seed in dung, then shaping it into a sphere by rolling it with the hind legs – with the daily course of the sun, which moves from east to west, indicating renewal and the constant self-regeneration.
